JUNE 19-22, 2008
CLINIC JUNE 16-18, 2008
Scotiabank International Optimist Regatta is celebrating its 16th year and is hailed as the regatta that launched the current wave of interest in Optimist sailing in the Caribbean. The St. Thomas Yacht Club and Virgin Island Sailing Association-hosted regatta is set to sail June 19 to 22, 2008.
“We are hoping to break the 100-boat participation mark this year,” says regatta director Cindy Hackstaff. “Our regatta is a great way to practice for the Optimist North American Championships, which start June 28 in Curacao.”
Junior sailors from 8 to 15 years of age are expected from destinations such as all three U.S. Virgin Islands, the British Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico, Venezuela, Anguilla, Argentina, Canada, Germany and the U.S. mainland.
The pre-regatta activities begin Monday, June 16th and run through Wednesday, June 18th, when top international coaches will teach a three-day instructional clinic.
“The idea of the clinic is too offer high level coaching to a wide range of skill levels, from medium to high level sailors,” says Agustin ‘Argy’ Resano, who’s heading up the clinic with Optisailor coaches, Gonzalo ‘Bocha’ Pollitzer and Manuel ‘Manny’ Resano, as well as Leandro Spina from the No Excuses Sailing Team in Florida.

House Committee – Bill Newbold
Membership Survey:
Many thanks to all of you that took the time to complete the Membership Survey! Your opinions and comments are an invaluable help to the Board. A detailed summary of your responses is posted on the club bulletin board for your review and a summary of your written comments and suggestions is also being prepared.
About 70 (signed) surveys were compiled. And while there is a great deal of information to share we have summarized some of the most salient points below.
Improvements to the facilities: In general there was a strong consensus for upgrading the appearance and utility of our facilities - 77% in favor overall. Following is a summary in order of importance:
- There is very strong support for developing a display of the STYC history and sailing accomplishments.
- Likewise by an 8 to 1 margin there was very strong support for renovating both the men’s and women’s bathrooms and showers and, in particular, developing a more attractive outdoor shower and toilet facilities for sandy sailors and juniors. (This new addition will also serve us well for regattas and major events).
- More than 3 to 1 were in favor of improving the appearance of the front entry area, improving the parking area and drainage, and upgrading the landscaping.
- 69% favor continuing to improve the tennis facilities, including Court 1.
- As for the clubhouse itself, improving the ‘Great Room’ had the most support (65%). About ½ the respondents supported improvements to the bar and deck area with the other ½ comfortable with the way it is or had no opinion.
- Opinion was divided whether to undertake additional improvements to the dock or leave it essentially as is. 54% favor expansion of the dock and dinghy facilities with 33% opposed.
- No clear consensus emerged on whether to improve the locker building and ‘pool room’ with a majority having ‘No Opinion’.
- Improving the squash court and boat ramp had the least support.
Survey Results on Food Services and Activities:
- Developing more boating events received overwhelming support, for both informal racing such as the Friday night racing and fun events involving sail and power boats.
- The new food service arrangement with Modern Sauté has been favorably received by almost 4 to 1.
- Nearly half of the respondents (45%) supported an Adult Learn-to-Sail program.
- Only 5% of the respondents were opposed to the new management structure for managing all racing, junior sailing, boating and maintenance of Club boats under the newly created Waterfront Committee. However 48% had ‘No Opinion’ indicating that many members aren’t aware of this new arrangement, which is definitely still a work in progress.

2008 Event to Offer IRC Division
ST. THOMAS, USVI (May 31, 2007)--For the 35th annual running of the International Rolex Regatta in March 2008, St. Thomas Yacht Club will welcome yachts sailing under the IRC rating rule as well as those sailing under the CSA (Caribbean Sailing Association) rating rule. The move--a first for the regatta and likely to set the trend for other Caribbean regattas--is intended to make it hassle-free for racing sailboats from the United States and Europe to compete. IRC is the only rule endorsed by ISAF (the International Sailing Federation) as an international rating rule and accepted throughout the world.
“With the majority of new racing sailboats being designed to IRC, it makes sense to allow them the chance to race under the IRC rule in one of the world’s best venues," said Regatta Co-Director John Sweeney. "We aren’t abandoning CSA; we are simply offering options to the sailors, and with that, encouraging a larger international fleet."
Sweeney further explained that CSA certificate holders are eligible to obtain an IRC rating as well. "We encourage owners to investigate the requirements, and local measurers can assist in the process," said Sweeney.
"With this development, we expect to see competitive racing under both rules and a growing potential for IRC throughout the Caribbean," said US-IRC Executive Director John Mendez, adding that the event will again be part of the US-IRC Gulf Stream Series. "Yachts that are from the U.S. and already have their certificates can easily join the regatta; I view it like a passport that travels with you wherever you wish to sail."
The three-day International Rolex Regatta, scheduled for Friday, March 28 through Sunday, March 30, 2008, is an annual favorite on the Caribbean racing calendar, catering not only to handicap yachts but also to one-design sailboats of at least 24 feet and beach cats. The regatta’s popularity is attributable to its professional race management, dependable trade winds and varied and challenging schedule of races -- including both windward-leeward and distance courses. After racing, beachside social activities blend St. Thomas Yacht Club's island-style hospitality with the outstanding camaraderie and competition that hundreds of participants have come to expect each year.
